Who owns metaverse?

No single entity has complete ownership of the metaverse network. The metaverse is a virtual 3D world that allows participation from everyone. Various metaverses are created by different individuals or teams. The creator of a metaverse theoretically holds ownership, but this is not always the case. For example, the Facebook Metaverse is owned by Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of the company. Decentraland, on the other hand, was created by Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano for a company called Metaverse Holdings Ltd, with ownership rights shared among several investors.

Is metaverse a digital real estate?

The term “metaverse” has gained significant attention in recent times, with extensive exploration of the virtual worlds where we can lead our digital lives. However, the focus on the real estate within these three-dimensional virtual universes has been relatively limited.

Within the metaverse, it is possible to purchase and own real estate, similar to the physical world. These virtual worlds are divided into parcels, often referred to as lands, which can be bought, sold, leased, rented, and developed.

A diverse range of individuals and entities are investing in these exclusive and limited lands, including luxury home builders, CEOs of multinational brands, and individuals looking to establish metaverse-based businesses.

Similar to the metaverse itself, the potential for any given metaverse land is virtually boundless. In this article, we will delve into what digital real estate entails, how it functions, the associated costs, and the impact of the recent decline in cryptocurrency prices.

It will examine relevant legislation in Australia, the United States (US), and other jurisdictions, including Canada, as well as legal cases that have addressed the issue of accessing or transferring digital property held by service providers like Facebook. Additionally, it will explore examples of service providers’ terms of use and whether these terms allow for third-party access to digital property. The chapter will conclude with recommendations on how individuals can manage their digital property as part of their will or estate.
